Hello there, and welcome back to the Mountain Practice Journeys podcast! I’m your host, Cindy. Here in Episode 54 I’m going to talk about my Deep Work & Rest Week, why you may want to consider it for yourself, and how it has positively impacted my business and life.

First, let me share what a Deep Work & Rest Week is. It is a week that I set aside once a month where I don’t schedule any sessions or appointments. This means that my calendar is completely free and that nothing external is dictating my time or attention. In other words, I have nothing telling me what to do.

Now let me explain why it is both a Deep Work Week and a Rest Week. You may be wondering why I don’t do one or the other. So let me share what I’ve come to realize.

In the past I have tried to set aside a large chunk of time to get some deep work done on my business. I have also tried to set aside a large chunk of time to rest and relax.

This seems like a great idea at first. We need time to do deep work, and we also need time to rest.

Where the problem arose is when it came time for me to fulfill the deep work time I had set aside, I wasn’t always feeling inspired or motivated. And when it came time for me to fulfill the rest and relaxation time I had set aside, I was sometimes hit with a spark of insight and was motivated to work.

When these occurrences happened I would get down on myself. I would feel bad about myself when I had set aside the time to really dig into working on my business but lacked the motivation to get started. I would also shame myself when I had set aside time to rest and relax (because we know how important this is) and would end up working instead.

Within Forestmind, my small-group mastermind, I am always helping the members to eliminate stresses and frustrations in their life and business. I do believe that there is a creative solution to every stress that arises in our business.

So, although these times I had set aside were a great idea, they were also causing stress because my energy didn’t always align with the specific function of the time that was set aside in advance.

I knew that there was a creative solution to this problem. I knew that I needed to eliminate the stressor. And I knew that both of these things, Deep Work & Rest, were important to my wellbeing and to the success of my business.

So I gave myself the freedom to follow my energy by creating a Deep Work & Rest Week. This took away the pressure to do one specific thing – work OR rest. This gave me the option to either do some deep work, or just rest, or a combination of both. There’s something to be said about having the freedom to listen to my intuition and follow my own energy.

Now that I have been implementing my Deep Work & Rest Week for a while now, I end up getting some quality work done on my business, and I also emerge from the week deeply rested and rejuvenated.

I have been surprised at how much of both of these things that I get accomplished during the week. I’m able to do some really deep reflection, big picture planning and implementation, make great strides in my business, and take action. I’m also taking random baths during the middle of the day, relaxing, reading, watching tv, and I sometimes just stare out the window in silence because I can. After all, I’m not shaming myself for anything that I do during this week.

Now let’s talk about why you may want to consider a Deep Work & Rest Week for yourself.

Imagine having an entire week where the pressure to “do” is turned off? It may be uncomfortable at first, but I guarantee that your physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health will be all the better for it.

Your business will be better off too. This may sound counterintuitive, but being on the hamster wheel is doing nothing for your business other than giving you a false sense of productivity. You don’t have time to truly think for yourself or have access to your intuition. So by taking regular breaks from your work, you can actually make more progress.

I do want to acknowledge that implementing a Deep Work & Rest Week may not be for everyone. It may not sound appealing to you and that’s okay. As with everything I say here on the podcast, take what serves you and leave what doesn’t.

If you are interested in beginning to implement my Deep Work & Rest Week for yourself, that’s really cool. And I hope you find as much benefit from it as I do.

I also want to leave you with a word of warning. It did take me a few tries to get to a place of having strong enough boundaries to actually pull off a Deep Work & Rest Week. You’re likely coming from a place where you feel guilty for resting, or taking time off, or creating space for deep work. I get it. It’s the society we live in. But it’s time for us to reclaim time and space for ourselves in the interest of our health.

You’ll likely be tempted to just have a “lighter” week and just schedule one or two things. After all, you’ll still have plenty of time for deep work and rest, right? I’m here to tell you that this is a slippery slope. I’ve experienced this myself. If just one appointment makes it into the Deep Work & Rest Week, it opens the floodgates.

I’ve now learned my lesson and am much better at protecting this time because I know how beneficial it has been for me because I have experienced it firsthand. Let me give you an example of how serious I am about this sacred time for myself. Last month I sat down to mark off my Deep Work & Rest Weeks for the following year. And, yes, by that I mean 2023. I couldn’t help it! It made me so happy to see these weeks marked off on my calendar that I’m doing it a year ahead of time.

Anyway, I noticed that I had a doctor appointment that was scheduled in January during my Deep Work & Rest Week, so I called to reschedule. It’s that important to me now. As a result of me having better boundaries I am awarded with more freedom and spaciousness.

You may be wondering when the best time is to schedule your Deep Work & Rest Week. And the answer is whatever works best for you. Notice that I didn’t say when it would be the best for your clients. I’m not going to go off on a tangent about this right now, although it is an important topic that I’ll address in a future episode of the podcast. So all I’ll say for now is that when you think of yourself first in your business, your clients will have a much better experience when working with you. Just trust me on this. And you should trust your intuition when it comes to your schedule.

I’ll share what I do and you can see if it may make sense for you as well. I schedule my Deep Work & Rest Weeks close to the time of the New Moon, as this is the energy that I’m looking to cultivate during this time. And it works out perfectly, as the lunar phase cycle is about every 29.5 days. If you’d like to learn more about harnessing the moon’s energy for your business and life, go back and listen to Episode 51.

It is also very likely that you may not need as much blank space or rest as I do, so you may want to schedule this week once per season or even every other month. Personally, I love having 12 weeks of this every year. But even if you only do this seasonally, that’s 4 weeks more than you were doing it before.

I know that my Deep Work & Rest Week may be a little unconventional, but give it a try and see if it doesn’t make a huge impact.

This week is more than meets the eye. By participating in this alternative way of working I am doing away with the notion that rest has to be earned and, instead, claiming rest as my birthright, all while consciously rejecting internalized capitalism, which is the idea that our inherent worth as human beings is directly related to our productivity.

Even without all these deeper benefits, the mere fact that you’re taking some quality time to focus on yourself and your business is enough.

I hope that my Deep Work & Rest Week is something that you will consider for yourself, or at least will inspire you to consider a creative and unconventional way of working that helps to protect you from burnout and keep you healthy and fulfilled.

ACORN (Tarot Card Pull)

Welcome to the acorn segment. With each solo episode I’ll be drawing a tarot card to help provide some magickal inspiration and insight.

The card for this episode is the Temperance card in its reversed position.

I’ll describe the card for those of you who may not be familiar. The Temperance card pictures an angel in a white robe with red wings, standing on a river bank with one foot in the water and one foot in the grass. The angel has a cup in each hand and pours water between the two.

Before I go into the meaning of this card, I just have to say how perfectly fitting it is for this episode. This card screams balance.

So, now on to the meaning. With this card in its reversed position, it can indicate an imbalance and that realignment and self-healing are needed.

You are being invited to restore balance to your life. This card can also come as a warning sign that you are burned out and depleted, and that restoring balance to your life is desperately needed at this time, for your own health and wellbeing.

This card is also about realignment, so there may be something about your work or life that is feeling off or unfulfilling. It is likely that you have been so busy that you haven’t taken the time and space to listen to your inner voice and tune into what would bring you more joy and fulfillment. So there may be a call for you to reexamine your priorities to ensure that you are in alignment with what you really want in life.

And I just have to add in that implementing a series of Deep Work & Rest Weeks for yourself could be exactly what is needed to restore balance.

I hope this message is helpful for you today.

I’ll post a picture of the card along with the message today on my instagram @mountainpracticejourneys so head on over and let me know if this message resonates with you at this time.
