Hello there, and welcome back to the Mountain Practice Journeys podcast! I’m your host, Cindy. Here in Episode 51 I’m going to talk about business and life planning with the moon phases.
I’m really excited about today’s topic!
As y’all already know, I love the natural world – nature, the seasons, all of it. The moon is also a big part of the natural world.
There’s a reason that I harp on nature all the time and that is because I believe that our modern society has taken us so far away not only from nature itself, but from the natural rhythms of our lives and bodies, and that we end up suffering as a result of this disconnection.
I could go on and on about this. But I digress, ya’ll are here to learn about the moon. So here we go!
Let’s start with a few facts. Although the moon takes 27.3 days to orbit the earth – the lunar phase cycle, that we will be talking about today, goes from new moon to new moon and takes 29.5 days.
There are many ways of conceptualizing the moon phases. In one system there may only be 4 phases of the moon, and in others there are 8. And, theoretically, the moon is in a different phase each day. However, for the purpose of today’s episode, I’ll be considering that there are 8 phases of the moon.
These phases are the New Moon, the Waxing Crescent Moon, the First Quarter Moon, the Waxing Gibbous Moon, the Full Moon, the Waning Gibbous Moon, the Last Quarter Moon, and the Waning Crescent Moon.
The first half of the cycle is when the moon is growing in illumination, also referred to as waxing. The second half of the cycle is when the moon’s illumination is getting smaller, also referred to as waning.
As the moon is growing, or waxing, the focus is on creation. And as the moon is fading, or waning, the focus is on reflection.
Now let’s dig into the 8 phases of the moon.
🌑 New Moon
We start with the New Moon, the beginning of the cycle. So let’s consider the New Moon as day 0 of the cycle.
Here’s a description of the New Moon so that you can picture it in your mind. The New Moon is referred to as the Dark Moon, because it is dark in the sky. There is no illumination from the sun during this phase.
The New Moon is all about new beginnings and fresh starts. It’s a time to pause and gather your thoughts for setting your intentions. Take time to rest, reflect, and dream.
On a side note, I always schedule my Deep Work & Rest Week during the week of the New Moon – I’ll share more about what this is during my next solo episode coming up in three weeks. The scheduling of this week is intentional, as it can be helpful to reduce your client workload around the time of the New Moon so that you can take time for rest and reflection, which allows you to gain clarity for the upcoming cycle.
🌒 Waxing Crescent Moon
Next is the Waxing Crescent Moon, which is 3 to 4 days into the cycle.
Here’s a description of the Waxing Crescent Moon so that you can picture it in your mind. The Waxing Crescent Moon is beginning to illuminate from the right side, therefore it is taking the shape of a backwards letter C.
The Waxing Crescent Moon is all about beginning to take action toward the intentions that you set at the New Moon. You may begin to feel the energy rising as you muster the courage to move forward, speak your intentions, and take the first steps toward your goal.
🌓 First Quarter Moon
Next we have the First Quarter Moon, which is about 7 days into the cycle.
Here’s a description of the First Quarter Moon so that you can picture it in your mind. The First Quarter Moon is continuing its illumination from the right side, therefore, the right half of the moon is illuminated.
The First Quarter Moon is all about decision making and taking action toward your intentions and goals. You may feel a burst of energy around this time. This is at a time in the cycle where challenges and obstacles may creep up, but don’t let them get you down.
🌔 Waxing Gibbous Moon
Next we have the Waxing Gibbous Moon, which is about 10 to 11 days into the cycle.
Here’s a description of the Waxing Gibbous Moon so that you can picture it in your mind. The Waxing Gibbous Moon is continuing its illumination from the right side, and is getting closer to full, therefore, the majority of the moon is illuminated, with the exception of a dark sliver on the left side.
The Waxing Gibbous Moon is all about refinement. You may need to make a course correction and readjust your approach so that you ensure the work you are doing is in alignment.
🌕 Full Moon
Next we have the Full Moon, which is about 14 days into the cycle.
Here’s a description of the Full Moon so that you can picture it in your mind. The Full Moon is just as you would imagine, fully illuminated in the sky.
The Full Moon is all about completion, celebration, and release. It’s time to harvest your rewards. And if your intention didn’t come to fruition, allow yourself to feel all the feels and forgive yourself, knowing that you did your best. Emotions can be high around the Full Moon, so be gentle with yourself.
🌖 Waning Gibbous Moon
Next we have the Waning Gibbous Moon, which is about 17 to 18 days into the cycle.
Here’s a description of the Waning Gibbous Moon so that you can picture it in your mind. The Waning Gibbous Moon is beginning the transition from full to new, therefore, the right side of the moon is beginning to darken and you will see most of the moon illuminated, with the exception of a dark sliver on the right side.
The Waning Gibbous Moon is all about gratitude and acceptance. Take stock of the cycle thus far and assess, evaluate, and reflect on lessons learned.
🌗 Last Quarter Moon
Next we have the Last Quarter Moon, also referred to as the Third Quarter Moon, which is about 21 days into the cycle.
Here’s a description of the Last Quarter Moon so that you can picture it in your mind. The Last Quarter Moon is continuing to darken from the right side, therefore, the left half of the moon remains illuminated.
The Last Quarter Moon is all about letting go of what no longer serves you. Organize, declutter, and cleanse in all the ways (physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually). Learn your lessons then forgive, release, and transform.
🌘 Waning Crescent Moon
And finally, we have the Waning Crescent Moon, which is about 24 to 25 days into the cycle.
Here’s a description of the Waning Crescent Moon so that you can picture it in your mind. The Waning Crescent Moon is continuing its transition to darkness from the right side and only a small sliver of the illuminated moon remains and it takes on the shape of the letter C.
The Waning Crescent Moon is all about surrender and detachment. Rest, healing, and restoration are all in order at this time. Go easy on yourself, and let yourself be empty for a moment.
So that wraps up a brief summary and description of each of the 8 phases of the moon that can be used for business and life planning.
I know this is a lot, especially if you are just becoming familiar with the moon phases and their associated energies. So, be sure to stay tuned, as I’ll also be publishing an upcoming series of bonus episodes about the moon where I go into more detail about the phases and how to work with each specific phase when planning in life and business.
I hope that you will follow along with me during this series as we work through an entire cycle of the moon together.
These bonus episodes will be published on the day before the phase of the moon that is being highlighted so that you’ll have real-time guidance and support as you work through the cycle.
The moon series will begin the day before the next new moon which is Friday, April 29th, so ensure that you are subscribed to the podcast and have selected automatic downloads in your settings so that you can see as the new bonus episodes are published.
The series will continue with a new bonus episode being published every 3 to 4 days until we complete the cycle.
Also, if you are listening to this episode after the series has began, just wait until a day before the next New Moon and follow along using the days into the cycle for each phase mentioned in this episode.
I also use an app called The Moon where I can easily see the phase of the moon on any given day, and I highly recommend it. And, you can also just ask Google what phase the moon is in.
I hope you have found this episode helpful in understanding more about the moon, her phases, and her energy to allow you to be in better flow in business and in life.
ACORN (Tarot Card Pull)
Welcome to the acorn segment. With each solo episode I usually draw a tarot card to help provide some magickal inspiration and insight. I’m going to switch things up for this episode and draw a card from the beautiful Moonology Oracle Cards deck by Yasmin Boland and artwork by Nyx Rowan.
The card I drew is the Waxing Moon: the energy is gaining momentum – and I’ll now read from the guidebook… “During the Waxing Moon cycle, hope springs eternal. This card is a very positive omen, indicating that you can create the reality you’re dreaming of, though it will take some work and you’re not quite there yet. This is a time of energies rising up. Emotions are building too. Where do you want to go and do you believe you can get there? Either you can just keep meditating and focusing on your desired outcome or you can make the courageous commitment to take more practical steps towards your goals. Whichever you decide, you are most certainly on the right track.”
You can “Attune to the Moon:” by using this affirmation “I know I’m headed in the right direction.”
“Additional meanings for this card:
-The situation is full of potential.
-Your dream can come true.
-More effort is yet required – are you willing to give it?
-Review your goals and ensure you’re still committed.
-Keep moving forwards.
“The teaching: The Waxing cycle is the period of the lunar cycle from New Moon to Full Moon, and during this time the Moon appears to be slightly bigger and rounder every night. This is a very empowered and empowering time, and this is a very promising card. It suggests now is the time to make plans and to act on them, no matter when you actually pull the card.”
What a beautiful message. And something that many of us may need to take to heart, myself included. I love dreaming, and planning, and organizing, and getting ready to take action. But sometimes fall short when it comes to taking action.
If you’ve been working on something, make a move and put it out there. It doesn’t have to be perfect. It’s actually best to put things out there before they are completely finished, because you’ll likely have to pivot, adjust, and mold them in order to get to where you want to go anyway. So why not get started now?
I’ll post a picture of the card along with the message today on my instagram @mountainpracticejourneys so head on over and let me know if this message resonates with you at this time.
If you’re interested in getting the Moonology Oracle Cards deck for yourself, which I highly recommend, I’ll share a link in the show notes.
Thank you so much for joining me today. For episode 52 I’ll be chatting with guests Sharon Gold-Steinberg & Carryn Lund of the Resourced Therapist on the topic of Empathy vs. Compassion Fatigue: What Causes Burnout?
