Hello there, and welcome to the Mountain Practice Journeys podcast! I’m your host, Cindy Norton. I’m sure you’re wondering what this podcast is all about. Well, that’s what you’ll find out here in episode 0. I’ll share with you who this podcast is for, a little about myself, what you can expect in future episodes, and provide some inspiration for you as you are on your private practice journey. Let’s get started.
Have you been wanting to start your private practice, but you can’t seem to take that first step? Maybe you’re afraid of failure or lack confidence, or maybe the idea of running your own practice is overwhelming. I’m Cindy Norton, owner of Mountain Practice Journeys and I help therapists and counselors to love the business side of private practice. I’ll share with you practical skills and advice along with a healthy dose of inspiration so that you can be on your way to the practice of your dreams. Put on your hiking boots, and let’s get going.
This is an introductory episode, letting you know what’s up ahead on the trail. Yes, I did say trail. If you’re not into references and analogies about forests and mountains, then you’re probably going to be sorely disappointed, because there’s plenty more to come.
All jokes aside, Mountain Practice Journeys is the place for counselors and therapists who want to learn more about private practice. Whether you are in graduate school or at an agency job and you have the dream of starting a private practice, or you already have your practice and you want to continue learning and growing, you are definitely in the right place. No matter what stage you are in, you are truly welcome here.
If you’re new to Mountain Practice Journeys, then you may not know that I give the name Trailblazer to the members of this community. Let’s talk a bit more about what this means.
By definition, a TRAILBLAZER is a person who makes a new track through wild country. It sometimes feels that way, doesn’t it? Like you are creating a path for yourself on this private practice journey. Sure, others have gone before you, but your path is unique and should be tailored to the dream practice that you have envisioned for yourself.
You don’t have to go at it alone.
I’m a Trailblazer too. Another definition of a trailblazer is a person who blazes a trail for others to follow through unsettled country or wilderness. A pathfinder. Someone who shows that it is also possible for other people.
That’s what I’m here for. I want to show you that it’s possible to have the practice of your dreams. It’s not always easy, but it’s always worth it.
There’s no need to reinvent the wheel. I’ve traveled this path before, so I can be your guide. That doesn’t mean that you have to take my trail. I can help you to create your own path with much more ease than if you were on your own.
We’ll be getting to know one another over the course of time, but let me share with you a bit more about who I am.
I live in Asheville, North Carolina with John, my partner of 7 years. I’m a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist and the owner of AVL Couples Therapy where I specialize in working with Happy Couples. Yeah, you heard that right, happy couples. I love to provide premarital counseling, couples therapy, and relationship coaching to couples who are wanting to enhance their relationship and make it the absolute best that it can be. I’m Level 3 trained in Gottman Method Couples Therapy and I genuinely love this approach, as it helps give couples the skills and confidence to have amazing partnerships. And – bonus points – this approach is based on 40 + years of research, so it’s super legit. In my private practice I have a mission to decrease the stigma of couples therapy and show that it’s for everyone, even happy couples.
I’ll go into further detail about how I developed my practice in future episodes where we dig deeper into niching, branding, marketing, and all the other topics related to having a successful private practice.
Now moving on to my second business. As you are aware, I’m also the owner of Mountain Practice Journeys where I help therapists love the business side of private practice. My undergrad is in Business Management, and my college schedule was filled with accounting, web design, and marketing classes. Here at Mountain Practice Journeys my main services for therapists include providing private practice coaching, building custom designed websites, and creating helpful courses. Now I’m adding podcasting to the mix.
If I’m being totally honest, I was terrified to start this podcast and to put myself out there. And I’d be lying if I said that I don’t still feel that way. But I’m taking on the mantra of ‘Feeling the Fear and Doing It Anyway.”
This feeling also reminds me of a time when I was dreaming of launching my own private practice. I was terrified and overwhelmed then too. But here I am – doing something else terrifying. I survived opening my private practice, so I’m betting that I will survive the launch of this podcast.
Even though you may feel scared and overwhelmed when thinking about starting your private practice – you will survive.
Even though you are frozen in fear when you think about launching a course or podcast, or following through on your next business idea – you too will survive.
I’m hoping that you can grow along with me. We are all constantly growing and evolving in our businesses. Imposter syndrome will creep up every single time that you start something new. It never ends. So let’s be on this journey together.
I’m extending a sincere invitation to you to join the Mountain Practice Journeys community. Are you in? Subscribe to this podcast and we’ll hike the mountains and valleys together.
I know that starting and growing a private practice can be overwhelming. There’s so much information out there and it can be easy to become paralyzed, so I want to give you one small take away, action step, or mindset shift during each episode. I’ll be calling these acorns. Don’t worry, it’s not just some cheesy way of incorporating more mountain and forest metaphors – I truly love what the acorn symbolizes. It’s a symbol of growth. Pretty fitting, right? The acorn is a reminder that we need both periods of growth and periods of rest. The acorn is also a symbol of your unlimited potential. A tiny little acorn can become a huge oak tree and seed an entire forest. How’s that for impact? You may feel like a small acorn now, but what you have to offer matters (whether you can see it now or not) – just trust me that it does. I’m even feeling like an acorn right now in the podcasting world. There’s so much I still have to learn, but by taking my little acorn-self and putting it into the realm of podcasting, I have the potential of becoming an oak tree and providing inspiration to even more therapists who want to grow in their private practice.
So the acorn from this introductory episode is a message of inspiration. Repeat after me… Oh, and I’m also going to be pausing so I truly want you to repeat after me: “I am strong… I am confident… I am unique… And I have something of great value to offer the world…” Say this everyday until you truly believe it.
Within each episode I’ll also be sharing either a product recommendation (which I’m calling the ‘What I’m Digging’ segment) or a fun fact about myself. What I’m Digging will be a recommendation for a product or service that has been really helpful for me on my private practice journey – something that I have tried out myself, found beneficial, and wouldn’t hesitate to tell others about.
I also think it’s important for us to get to know one another. I’m not just a sound coming out of your speaker, I’m a real human being. By sharing more of myself I hope that you will see me as someone who is like you, a therapist who is growing and doing the best they can within their practice. I want to get to know you too, so please don’t hesitate to reach out. As far as the fun facts go, I’ll occasionally be sharing something interesting about myself. Or who knows, it may be something boring. Anyway, it will be something about me.
The fun fact for this episode is that I’m a huge introvert. I was also painfully shy as a child. So much so that I would hide behind my dad’s leg when he tried to introduce me to someone. I like to make the distinction that being an introvert doesn’t mean that you are shy, or being shy doesn’t make you an introvert. However, I was both. As I’ve gotten older, I’m no longer shy and I don’t hide from people I’m being introduced to. It has taken me many years to overcome my shyness, but I’m still a true introvert. I love being at home by myself reading, researching, and being introspective. Even though I’m an introvert, I truly love connecting with others. Connection makes this life much easier to endure. And I’m looking forward to connecting with you.
As far as what you can expect in future episodes – there will be topics related to branding, niching, marketing, websites, copywriting, sliding scale, cancellation policies, rate setting, client scheduling, business structures, taxes, email marketing, networking, finances, productivity tips, and much more. I know that’s a lot, but I’ll be taking my cues from you, so please don’t hesitate to reach out and let me know what topics you are most interested in hearing more about. Check out the show notes page for contact information.
This podcast is mainly a solo show with yours truly, with occasional interviews and features with special co-hosts and expert guests.
